Portal cranes have high operating speeds. Lifting speeds can reach 70 m/min, and luffing speeds can reach 55 m/min. The rated lifting capacity range is wide, generally from 5 to 100 tons (t), while the lifting capacity range for shipbuilding portal cranes is even larger, now reaching 150 to 300 tons (t).

Portal cranes have high operating efficiency. They can work for 22 hours per day, with high hourly efficiency, generally exceeding 100 tons per hour.

Portal cranes have a three-dimensional structure. They do not occupy much area in docks or freight yards, featuring a tall gantry and a long reach, thus providing a large lifting height and working radius, meeting the requirements of mechanized loading, unloading, and transshipment of ships and vehicles in ports and docks, and maximizing the use of space.

Portal cranes are expensive. They require a large amount of steel, and their weight is generally between 500T and 1000T. It requires a large power supply, typically 10kV/50Hz. The wheel voltage is generally high, for example, ≤300KN for a 40T/45M transformer. It also requires a solid foundation and a number of auxiliary equipment, such as substations and cables.
