Features of portal cranes
The working mechanism of portal cranes has a high movement speed. The lifting speed can reach 70 meters per minute (m/min), and the variable speed can reach 55 meters per minute.
The rated lifting capacity of portal cranes is very wide. Generally, it is 5-100 tons (t), and the lifting capacity range of shipbuilding portal cranes is even larger, now reaching 150-300 tons (t).
Portal cranes have high efficiency. They can work 22 hours a day and night. The structure of portal cranes is three-dimensional, and they do not occupy much area of docks and cargo yards. They have tall gantry and long-distance booms, so they have large lifting height and working range, which can meet the requirements of mechanized loading and unloading, transshipment and full use of the site of ships and vehicles at port terminals.
Portal cranes are expensive. The manufacture of portal cranes requires a lot of steel, and their deadweight is generally 500T-1000T. It requires a larger power supply, and the power supply is generally: 10kV/50Hz. The wheel pressure is generally large, taking 40T/45M as an example, it is generally ≤300KN. The portal crane requires a solid foundation and more ancillary equipment, such as substations, cables, etc.
